BANQUET
On April 4th, the annual Communication Sciences and Disorders Celebratory Department Banquet was held at the Bloomington-Normal Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. The combined efforts from members of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) and the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) made this year’s banquet the biggest celebration the department has ever had. “I have been a part of this Department for 21 years and, to my knowledge, this is the first time so many graduate students and audiology students have participated along with our undergraduates to celebrate everyone’s accomplishments and to socialize as one unit,” Department Chair Dr. Ann Beck said. This event is prepared with the intention to show acknowledgment to the most important members of faculty and students within the CSD department, and to recognize the successes of the passing academic year.
The Professor or the Year award for audiology was given to Dr. Joseph Smaldino and the Professor of the Year award for speech language pathology was given to Dr. Lisa Vinney. However, Dr. Smaldino and Dr. Vinney were not the only professors that were recognized this year’s banquet. Since the theme of this year’s banquet was to unite the department, the members of SAA and NSSLHA set out to recognize each and every professor within the department. Throughout the spring semester, SAA and NSSLHA gathered quotes from undergraduate and graduate students within the department about their personal experiences with their favorite professors. These quotes were eventually put into “letters of recommendation,” recognizing and appreciating the outstanding efforts that the professors put forth to help students reach their highest goals.
The students were given an opportunity to win raffle prizes that ranged from gift certificates to local restaurants to therapy materials from major companies such as Super Duper Publications, Pearson, and Progressus Therapy. There were over thirty raffle prizes won to by both students and faculty. These prizes act as a way for NSSLHA to give back to its students that have generously volunteered their time throughout the academic year.
Overall, the banquet was a great opportunity for staff, faculty, and students to celebrate another great year for the department together. We hope to keep this successful celebration and unification of the department for many years to come!
